The production and mining of coal is a great manufacturing and resource extraction. The largest coal producer in the world is the Republic of China and the country with the largest recoverable coal in the world is the United States. Only after the U.S. comes India, china and Russia. The largest coal consumers are the U.S. and China. India, Australia, Russia and South Africa are also countries with important coal producing.
Coal mining regions always has a tremendous economic activity an in the U.S. it is mined along the Midwest and Appalachian Mountains. Coal in the modern U.S. gets mined mostly at the Powder River Basin in Wyoming using western surface mines. Mountaintop removal mining is the mining method used mainly in Appalachians.
The biggest recoverable coal reserves states in the U.S. are in ascending order Montana, Illinois, West Virginia and Wyoming at the largest. Near Gillette in Wyoming is the U.S. largest single mine, called the Black Thunder Coal Mine. Annually this mine produces much more coal than many states.
Other areas with large coal mining activities are, Pennsylvania Coal Region, West Virginia, Kentucky’s Western Coal Fields, Eastern Mountain Coal, Harrisburg Coal Field, Southern Illinois Coal Filed, Colorado, Raton Basin and the Powder River Basin. In 1990 the underground mining in the U.S. East regions came to a total of 277,009 thousand short tons, the surface mining in the U.S. East regions, 169,897. In the West the underground mining was 55,237 and the surface in the Western region 570,092 thousand short tons.
